I took a job this spring with Idaho Fish & Game, part time checking salmon fisherman and checking the river from Riggins to Vinegar creek. Lots of driving up and down the river. The pluse side was checking out the chukar on the river road, lots of them. Yesterday they did a fly over, chukar not F&G, 4 adult birds and at lest 15 to 20 chicks. They went right over the cab of the truck and landed just off the road on a rock, as I was trying to get the camera out, they dissapeared into the rocks down by the river. No photos of them but, I did get some a couple of days ago.

and there is always a few of these around

Looks like this will be a good chukar year up here

That's looking favorable, are you getting any moisture up that way?

Looks good to me. Hoping for the best up there 'cuz it's looking pretty bleak down my way again this year. Was thinking I might give my regional commissioner a call and suggest reducing the chukar limit to 6 to allow them to come back.

Great report! I love driving around looking for chukar and other game. We were near West Yellowstone this weekend and saw some very young blue grouse. I did not have my camera but it sure was good to see them after our rough early June weather.

After seeing those birds, I am glad I started my preseason conditioning routine today. 2.5 miles of gravel road, 90 degrees, and lots of sweat....bring on the season.

No worry fellas. I've banned BlackDeth from the site and notified F&G that some crazy animal rights activist is planning a campaign to reduce upland bird seasons around the country!!! ;-)

Along with the lighting and thunder we are getting rain, yesterday and the day before. We have a couple of small fires burning but it looks like they are under control. Both were on the little salmon.

Just got back from looking for some snakes. Wish they were as easy to find as the chukars.

I saw four hens with from 12 to 15 little ones in each clutch. The hens were pretty photogenic, trying to keep my attention on them.

The little ones hid well in the different cover. Most of the time I only knew they were still there because of the movement in the cheat.

The four groups were in different locations and Riley and I spent at least two hours observing them.

What amazed me the most was how the little ones never quit eating. No wonder they grow so fast.

If I got within a foot or two them they would freeze but if I stayed back a couple of yards there heads just kept picking at bugs and seeds as they hid.

The age of the chicks in all four coveys was probably around one week old.

Nice job Larry! Where in Nevada were you?

4 clutches of 12-15 chicks each DUDE that's the best hatch numbers I've had reported in years. Now I'm getting excited...time to go count my shells and make sure my vest is still hanging in the closet and the gun is still in the case and the truck is loade...ok...probably too early to load up.

Wow…I am heading to Nevada too. I found two snakes today on my mountain bike ride. One genuine rattler and the other a look alike, it was a big one. I should take along my cell phone and shoot some pictures. Good job Larry.

Are those red-legged or Barbary partridge? I didn't know either were in Nevada.

Sorry just re-read Karl's mis-direction. I'm up to speed now but still confused where this hen came from.

Wow! I was so interested in taking pictures I didn't even notice that. This is actually two different hens and probably five miles between the two.

I think those are Red Legged partridge, but not sure? I saw some like that when I visiting the Big Island in Hawaii. They are very cool. I hope the Idaho clutches are as big

Have you ever seen one before, Larry? I'm confident I haven't, except in photos. If they didn't have broods I'd have said they were apparently recently released but these are wild enough to breed successfully. Wonder if the chicks will end up hybrids with chukar. Great photos.

Karl, may be a good question for Jeff. Where did these birds come from?

Oregon attempted to introduce French red legged partridges, maybe 15-20 ? years ago. If I recall right I think it was near the Snake River somewhere. They never did well so they stopped the program.
