| Land owner tag idea is coming up here in Alaska too. Doubt if it will get traction here. |

The landowner appreciation bill (S-1282) has passed in the Senate and now goes to the House Resources & Conservation Committee. That's where the bill to prevent F&G from restricting ATV travel by hunters is being debated, too. Here's the place to get updates:

I've been testifying on a couple bills. It's very disappointing to see how little sportsmen get involved. They are incredibly apathetic about threats to hunting and fishing in Idaho. Do you know how many of your hunting friends have ever contacted a legislator about a bill that affects F&G? |

| S1256, the bill that will allow big game tags to be auctioned, was debated in the House Resources Committee on Thursday. There were no sportsman's groups in favor of it and a few against it, including the F&G Commission and Outfitters and Guides Assoc. The committee sent the bill to another committee to be amended (just a few minor technical language changes) and then it will go directly to the House floor to be voted on. Sending a bill to another committee to be amended is a way of avoiding having to vote on a bill. 1256 will then be passed in the House because there's a lot of political contributions that have been made by the one person who wants the bill to pass. It will then go back to the senate to be voted on there. That's the only chance of defeating it and it will take a couple senators changing their votes to kill the bill. Please contact as many senators as you can and ask them to vote against it. There are no sportsmen's groups in Idaho that have come out in favor of it. Contacting info is in one of the earlier posts. |

It's surprising how little reaction there is from the average hunter regarding this bill. Do we really want to be selling off tags to the highest bidder? What will this lead to next?
The fact that IDFG is opposed to it and RMEF is opposed to a similar bill currently being debated in Arizona ought to tell you something.
More food for though here... http://www.hcn.org/blogs/range/sportsmen-stab-theodore-roosevelt-in-the-back |

| Today the Senate Resources Committee voted to send the ATV hunting bill to the senate with a recommendation to pass it. The bill will take away the authority of the F&G Commission to regulate hunting from ATVs. If it passes in the senate it will probably result in more hunting units going to controlled hunts because that will be the only way to decrease pressure on elk and deer herds. It will probably pass. Do you know how your legislators are voting on this bill? |

Well, whatever you guys do up in Id., DO NOT follow your southern neighbor's lead with respect to public lands and wildlife mgt. We've given the world the Sportsmen for Fish & Wildlife and the infamous Mr. Don Peay and now our state politicians think they have an opening to confiscate pretty much all public lands, particularly BLM and forest service.

It looks like it's Sportsmen for Fish and Wildlife (SFW) who is behind S1256 and S1282, which are both mentioned in earlier posts. They are both attempts to sell Idaho big game tags to the highest bidder.
We're down to the last week of the Legislature session and things are happening fast, so please contact your legislators if you have concerns about these bills. In fact, some people are emailing all the ID state senators about these bills in an attempt to kill the bills.

The ATV bill was defeated yesterday after much debate. The auction tag bill will likely be up for a vote today. |
