Last night, my 7-year-old son, cousin, and I visited an abandoned spud cellar that is currently being used to store hay. Objective was to spotlight and net some training pidgeons/rock doves. What a flippin' hoot! My boy even got in on the action and netted one himself. He was pretty stoked up. It wasn't cold in there but he was shakin' like a bird dog. It was a little spooky in the dark with headlamps. Add the 30-foot deep crevices in the haystacks, creaking building, years of dead animal debitage, and hissing barn owls and it felt like a Stephen King novel come to life. But what a riot and a darn fun way to collect training birds. Now I wish I'd have taken a camera. I will next time.

Another bonus is I will begin re-introducing Remy to birds--hobbled pidgeons--in an old-school and controlled fashion. Hoping to kick Remy's desire up a notch while getting her used to the idea of staying put on find, point, and flush, as well as marking the flight of the hobbled bird. I will not be trying to replace her experiences hunting wild birds, rather adding non-field training elements that I hope will increase her effectiveness this next season. I'm excited to see how it transpires having never done it before. The goals and methodology make a lot of sense to me. Will give an update after the first couple releases. If anyone has done this or something similar, I'd be interested in hearing about your experience.

OK, not near as controlled as I had anticipated. Not sure how a 30 pound pup can turn a 210 pound guy on his head but she nearly got it done. She also made some noises I've never heard from her. I did keep ahold and she went absolutely bonkers, so mission accomplished. Will make a few adjustments and hopefully things will go a little better next time.
